Biography

1942 Born in Hampton Hill, Middlesex
1958-59 Studied at Twickenham School of Art
1959-63 Studied at Kingston School of Art
1963 Granted a Leverhume Travelling Scholarship to France and Italy
1965 Worked as an assistant to Bryan Kneale; taught at London College of Printing. Later teaches part-time in many art schools.
1966 Exhibited in the 'New Generation' show at the Whitechapel Gallery, London
1966-1967 Peter Stuyvesant Foundation Travel Bursary to USA.
1968 First solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, London
1976 Won a prize at the Tolly Cobbold/Eastern Arts 3rd National Exhibition
1977, 1979 Arts Council of Great Britain Award; Arts Council of Great Britain Purchase Award (1979)
1980-1999 Taught at Chelsea College of Art and Design
1986 Takes part in international exhibition ‘Die Ecke’ at Galerie Hoffmann, Friedberg, Frankfurt, Germany
2007 Elected Royal Academician
2010 Retrospective at the Redfern Gallery and the publication of a monograph on the artist’s work by the Royal Academy of Arts
2016 Awarded Hon.Doctorate in Art and Design by Kingston University Lives and works in London.
