Danny Romeril

b. 1996

Danny Romeril (b. 1996, Jersey, Channel Islands) is a British painter whose work explores memory, place and the everyday environments through which contemporary life is experienced. His paintings often begin with familiar subjects — a shopfront, a chimney pot, a domestic object or a fleeting architectural detail — before being transformed through memory and the process of painting into something less fixed and more ambiguous.

Romeril completed a Foundation Diploma at Highlands College, Jersey, before studying Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London, graduating in 2019. That same year he undertook a residency at La Brea Studio, Los Angeles, alongside Florence Hutchings, culminating in a joint exhibition at The Cabin, Los Angeles.

Drawing provides an important starting point for his work, but the image often changes considerably as the painting develops. Romeril builds up surfaces through successive layers of paint, frequently scraping areas back to reveal earlier stages beneath. This combination of observation, memory and instinct allows recognisable subjects to move between the real and the imagined.

In recent years he has exhibited in Britain and internationally, including solo exhibitions in the United Kingdom and Germany and group exhibitions in South Korea. His work frequently returns to the architecture of everyday life and to the objects and spaces through which people encounter one another.

The Redfern Gallery presented Romeril’s solo exhibition Bric-à-Brac in 2025. The exhibition focused on shops, retail spaces and places of exchange, transforming familiar objects, displays and fragments of urban life into richly layered paintings in which observation and invention continually overlap.

In 2026 Romeril returned to The Redfern Gallery for Under One Roof, a joint exhibition with Florence Hutchings. The exhibition reflected the fact that the two artists live and work in the same house in Margate, with studios separated only by a corridor, while maintaining very different approaches to painting.

Romeril continues to develop a body of work in which commonplace objects, interiors and fragments of the built environment become vehicles for exploring memory, human presence and the shifting boundary between observation and imagination.
