Debbie Urquhart

Debbie Urquhart (b. 1972, London) is a British painter whose work explores the relationship between observed reality and abstraction through colour, shape and structure. Everyday objects, interiors and views through windows are reduced and reorganised into carefully balanced compositions of intersecting planes, lines and geometric forms.

Urquhart studied Fine Art at Newcastle University, graduating in 1995. Nature and direct observation remain the starting point for her work, although the finished paintings are shaped equally by selection, simplification and invention. As she has described it, her painting is “a balance in itself between seeing, selecting and inventing”.

Colour is central to her practice. Soft, muted tones are frequently set against brighter accents, while her palette often recalls the restrained harmonies of historic British interiors. Objects and architectural details are used not simply as subjects but as elements through which space, rhythm and visual relationships can be explored.

Her paintings often move between recognisable subject matter and abstraction. Window frames, tabletops, vessels and other familiar forms provide underlying structures, while shifts in scale, colour and viewpoint allow the composition to develop independently of the original scene.

Urquhart has described the process of painting as both “challenging and addictive”, and her work reflects a sustained interest in the way colour and form can heighten the experience of looking at both art and the natural world.

She has exhibited extensively in group exhibitions in London and Palm Beach and has held several solo exhibitions with London galleries.
