Through light, colour and shape, Debbie Urquhart strives to connect the viewer to a scene or object that visually delights them. Urquhart explains how ‘if the painting can achieve a parallel visual display, connecting the human visual soul to the work of art as well as to nature, one elevating and illuminating the other in a reciprocal visual dialogue, then I regard it as successful.’
Debbie Urquhart describes the process of painting as both ‘challenging and addictive’. She weaves together colours and shapes, lines and angles, into geometric and elegant compositions. Everyday objects become abstract shapes of colour and window views create intertwined compositions. The colours are soft and calming, punctuated and juxtaposed with brighter hues; her palette is quintessentially English, reminiscent of the harmonious pigments found in historical interiors as far back as the 17th century. "My painting is a balance in itself between seeing, selecting and inventing but nature is always the starting point."
Debbie Urquhart has exhibited extensively in group shows in London and Palm Beach and has had several solo exhibitions at London galleries. She lives and works in London.
