On Paper: Surface and Structure
5 June - 30 August 2019

John Carter RA is best known for his abstract reliefs in which a dynamic dialogue between painting and sculpture takes place. These wall reliefs start out as rough sketches in a notebook, before the artist develops the ideas and makes larger, more measured drawings, which have been described as "fascinating models of colour abstraction". These drawings, made from 1965 to the present day, are the focus of On Paper: Surface and Structure, which coincides with the publication of a new monograph on the artist's works on paper, written by Stephen Bann and published by the Royal Academy of Arts.

Due to popular demand, the exhibition has been extended until the end of August. Sold works have been taken down, and the show re-hung. To coincide with three recent print editions selling out at the RA Summer Exhibition, a selection of prints will be shown, including newly-published screenprints, alongside woodcuts completed in the late '80s and early '90s. A number of large-scale wall reliefs are also on view, some for the first time.
