Then and Now

A Group Exhibition
15 April 2026

We are excited to announce our inaugural exhibition on Pall Mall after 90 years on Cork Street.

Then and Now is a group exhibition including all Redfern artists – new and old. It reflects on the Redfern’s enduring commitment to supporting artists at different stages of their careers, from early exhibitions to long-term collaborations and to fostering artistic development over time. An ethos that we continue to uphold today.

Conceived around the themes of continuity, consistency, and change, the exhibition brings together works by modern and contemporary artists, tracing the development of their practices over time. Early works are brought into dialogue with more recent ones, revealing a diversity of approaches in material, form, and subject, while remaining united by a strong and distinctive sense of individual artistic identity.

This dialogue extends across the exhibition. Paul Feiler’s progression from landscape-based abstraction to his exploration of ‘elusive space’; Margaret Mellis’ shift from Constructivist reliefs to driftwood sculpture; John Carter’s movement across abstraction, Minimalism, and sculptural wall objects; and David Tindle’s transition from heavily worked material surfaces to the delicate precision of egg tempera – each offers a distinct trajectory shaped over decades.

At the heart of Then and Now are the relationships that have defined The Redfern. Artists such as Patrick Procktor, whose first solo exhibition with the gallery in 1963 marked the beginning of a long and influential association, exemplify a practice that evolves while maintaining a distinctive sensibility.

As The Redfern opens its doors on Pall Mall, the exhibition situates the gallery between past and present, between Cork Street and St James’s, and between the histories it carries and those that continue to unfold. This group exhibition will feature work from all our Redfern artists, new and old, among many more.

We invite you to join us to celebrate Then and Now, a reflection on where we have been, and where we are going. A selection of featured artworks can be seen in our preview below.
