Bryan Organ at 90
To coincide with the launch of Thames & Hudson’s new publication: Bryan Organ: Picturing People, The Redfern Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition celebrating one of Britain’s most distinguished portrait painters. Bryan Organ has been exclusively represented by The Redfern Gallery since 1967.
Born in Leicester in 1935, Organ has painted some of the most recognisable faces of the 20th century including HM King Charles III, Elton John, Harold Macmillan, and President François Mitterrand. His works have been commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery more than any other 20th-century painter.
Organ redefined the traditions of portraiture, creating works marked by modernity, intimacy, and psychological depth.
This exhibition includes paintings and drawings from the 1950s to the present day. It brings together works that highlight Organ’s meticulous draughtsmanship, his acute observation of character, and his ability to transform encounters with sitters into portraits that remain as powerful today as when they were first painted.
