Peter Sedgley (1930)

Biography

Born in London, he was encouraged to pursue a career in architecture after showing an early talent in painting and drawing at school. After ten years, he abandoned this career for art. Sedgley describes his lack of formal training as ‘both helpful and disadvantageous.’ He found himself fascinated by the dynamic created by arrangement of lines, shapes and colours, attracted by the ‘visual vibrations’ of the configurations and sought their ‘emotive power.’ Influenced by Paul Klee and Josef Albers, Sedgley became one of the leading figures in the progressive op-art movement in London. In 1968, he was a founder member of Space Provision Artistic Cultural and Educational (SPACE) and Art Information Registry (AIR), along with Bridget Riley and Peter Townsend. Experimentation with real movement became a cornerstone of Sedgley’s practice in the 1960s and 70s. Coloured lights, mirrors and mechanical motion all began to appear in paintings and light installation pieces. Exhibiting regularly in both England and Germany, he has had numerous public and private commissions; Sedgley has installed work in the British Embassy, Berlin, the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago and Pimlico Underground Station for the Tate Gallery, London. His work is held in numerous public collections, including the V&A, Tate, and Berlinische Galerie, Berlin. He currently lives and works in Sussex and Berlin.
