Danny Markey RWA
"For me, painting and the choice of subject is impulsive. However, I do try to avoid the picturesque and look at the unregarded yet common aspects of the world around me. In the end what matters is what you make of it in paint but I seem to need a place, a landscape to get me going and the little epiphanies that trigger ideas for my paintings can occur in the most ordinary settings."
Danny Markey, 2009
Danny Markey was born in Falmouth, Cornwall in 1965. He now lives in Wales. His paintings extract a colourful and spontaneous simplicity from the landscape and from his immediate surroundings. Travel inspires him and he has lived and painted in Cornwall, Japan and USA.
Between 1983 and 1987 he studied at Falmouth School of Art and Camberwell School of Art. In 1986/87 he won First Prize at the South Bank Picture Show, Royal Festival Hall, London.
His first solo show at the Redfern was in 1994 and he has shown regularly there since. His work has been widely shown and in 1997 The Old Jail House, Albany, Texas mounted a retrospective exhibition.
in 2001 he was elected a Royal West of England Academician. His work is in numerous private and public collections including the British Museum. He lives and works in Wales.
