Linda Karshan

Biography

Biography
Linda Karshan was born of Romanian origins, in Minneapolis, USA in 1947. She moved to London in 1969 and now lives in central London and works at her studio in Denmark Hill - moving each summer to Connecticut USA to live and work.

Her reputation has been created by her graphic work. Since 1994 this has tended to be both abstract and minimalist in character, normally flowing from a process of rhythmic repetition. She uses pencil but also brush and turpentine. She makes etchings and woodcuts as well as drawings.

She studied at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY (1965-67), The Sorbonne, Paris (Art History) in 1968 and in 1968-69 at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. She later took a masters degree in psychology (1980-83).

Her first solo show at the Redfern Gallery was in 1996. Since 1984 she has had solo shows in various galleries in London (including the Sir John Soane Museum), and in New York, Munich, Minneapolis, Cologne, Bucharest, San Francisco, Cluj (Romania), Valencia (a major retrospective at IVAM in 2002) and Cambridge (Kettle's Yard in 2003).
